  1. Relation between angle of incidence and deviation in a prism

For a prism, the angle of deviation is

δ=i+e−A\delta = i + e - Aδ=i+e−A

where:

  • iii = angle of incidence,
  • eee = angle of emergence,
  • AAA = angle of prism.

As iii changes, eee also changes, so δ\deltaδ varies with iii.


  1. Nature of the graph

For a prism, the deviation first decreases with increase in angle of incidence, reaches a minimum value δmin⁡\delta_{\min}δmin​, and then increases again.

So the graph of δ\deltaδ versus iii is a U-shaped curve.


  1. Condition at minimum deviation

At minimum deviation,

i=e,i = e,i=e,

and the path of the ray through the prism is symmetric.

Thus the δ\deltaδ-iii graph has a turning point at δmin⁡\delta_{\min}δmin​.
