A ray of laser of a wavelength 630 nm is incident at an angle of 30 ∘^\circ∘ at the diamond-air interface. It is going from diamond to air. The refractive index of diamond is 2.42 and that of air is 1. Choose the correct option.
  1. A
angle of refraction is 24.41 ∘^\circ∘
  2. B
angle of refraction is 30 ∘^\circ∘
  3. C
    refraction is not possible
  4. D
angle of refraction is 53.4 ∘^\circ∘

Correct answer: C

  1. Given data
  • Wavelength of laser: 630 nm630\,\text{nm}630nm
(This is not needed for finding the refracted angle here.)
  • Angle of incidence: i=30∘i = 30^\circi=30∘
  • Light is going from diamond to air
  • Refractive index of diamond: n1=2.42n_1 = 2.42n1=2.42
  • Refractive index of air: n2=1n_2 = 1n2=1
  1. Use Snell's law

n1sin⁡i=n2sin⁡rn_1 \sin i = n_2 \sin rn1sini=n2sinr

Substitute the values:

2.42sin⁡30∘=1⋅sin⁡r2.42 \sin 30^\circ = 1 \cdot \sin r2.42sin30∘=1⋅sinr

Since,

sin⁡30∘=12\sin 30^\circ = \frac{1}{2}sin30∘=21

So,

sin⁡r=2.42×12=1.21\sin r = 2.42 \times \frac{1}{2} = 1.21sinr=2.42×21=1.21

  1. Check physical possibility

But we know that for any real angle,

sin⁡r≤1\sin r \le 1sinr≤1

Here,

sin⁡r=1.21>1\sin r = 1.21 > 1sinr=1.21>1

which is impossible.

Therefore, refraction cannot occur.

  1. Interpretation using critical angle

Since light is going from a denser medium (diamond) to a rarer medium (air), total internal reflection can occur.

Critical angle ccc is given by:

sin⁡c=n2n1=12.42\sin c = \frac{n_2}{n_1} = \frac{1}{2.42}sinc=n1n2=2.421

c=sin⁡−1(0.4132)≈24.4∘c = \sin^{-1}(0.4132) \approx 24.4^\circc=sin−1(0.4132)≈24.4∘

Given incidence angle is

i=30∘>c≈24.4∘i = 30^\circ > c \approx 24.4^\circi=30∘>c≈24.4∘

So the ray undergoes total internal reflection, and refraction is not possible.

  1. Evaluate options
  • A: 24.41∘24.41^\circ24.41∘ → This is actually the critical angle, not the angle of refraction. Incorrect.
  • B: 30∘30^\circ30∘ → Incorrect.
  • C: Refraction is not possible → Correct.
  • D: 53.4∘53.4^\circ53.4∘ → Incorrect.
  1. Final answer

The correct option is:

C\boxed{\text{C}}C

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer: C
Derived answer: C
They match.
