  1. Use the lens relations

For a thin lens, taking magnitudes, m=vum=\frac{v}{u}m=uv​ and the lens formula is 1f=1v+1u.\frac{1}{f}=\frac{1}{v}+\frac{1}{u}.f1​=v1​+u1​.

From magnification, u=vm.u=\frac{v}{m}.u=mv​. Substitute into the lens formula: 1f=1v+1v/m=1v+mv=1+mv.\frac{1}{f}=\frac{1}{v}+\frac{1}{v/m}=\frac{1}{v}+\frac{m}{v}=\frac{1+m}{v}.f1​=v1​+v/m1​=v1​+vm​=v1+m​. Hence, m=vf−1.m=\frac{v}{f}-1.m=fv​−1.

So the graph of mmm versus vvv is a straight line with:

  • slope =1f=\dfrac{1}{f}=f1​
  • intercept on the mmm-axis =−1=-1=−1
