  1. For a prism, the angle of deviation is
δ=i+e−A\delta = i + e - Aδ=i+e−A

where:

  • iii = angle of incidence
  • eee = angle of emergence
  • AAA = prism angle
  1. As the angle of incidence iii changes, the deviation δ\deltaδ does not change linearly.

  2. Important property of a prism:

  • The deviation first decreases with increase in iii
  • It reaches a minimum value δmin⁡\delta_{\min}δmin​
  • Then it increases again

So the graph of δ\deltaδ vs iii is a U-shaped curve.

  1. At minimum deviation condition:
i=ei=ei=e

and the path of the ray inside the prism is symmetric.

  1. Therefore, the correct graph is the one that shows:
  • decreasing deviation initially,
  • then a minimum,
  • then increasing deviation.
