Three identical charged balls each of charge 2 C are suspended from a common point P by silk threads of 2 m each (as shown in figure). They form an equilateral triangle of side 1m. The ratio of net force on a charged ball to the force between any two charged balls will be : JEE Main 2022 (Online) 27th June Evening Shift Physics - Electrostatics Question 125 English

Correct answer: D

  1. Force between any two balls

Each ball has charge q=2 Cq=2\,\text{C}q=2C and the distance between any two balls is the side of the equilateral triangle, a=1 ma=1\,\text{m}a=1m.

So the electrostatic force between any two balls is

F=14πε0q2a2F=\frac{1}{4\pi\varepsilon_0}\frac{q^2}{a^2}F=4πε01a2q2

We do not need its numerical value, only the ratio.

  1. Forces acting on one ball

Consider one ball, say ball AAA.

It experiences repulsive forces due to the other two balls BBB and CCC. Since all charges are identical and all sides are equal:

  • force due to BBB on AAA has magnitude FFF
  • force due to CCC on AAA has magnitude FFF

The angle between these two forces is the angle of the equilateral triangle:

∠BAC=60∘\angle BAC=60^\circ∠BAC=60∘
  1. Net electrostatic force on one ball

Resultant of two equal forces FFF making angle 60∘60^\circ60∘ is

Fnet=F2+F2+2F2cos⁡60∘F_{\text{net}}=\sqrt{F^2+F^2+2F^2\cos 60^\circ}Fnet=F2+F2+2F2cos60∘ Fnet=2F2+2F2⋅12F_{\text{net}}=\sqrt{2F^2+2F^2\cdot \frac12}Fnet=2F2+2F2⋅21 Fnet=3F2=3 FF_{\text{net}}=\sqrt{3F^2}=\sqrt3\,FFnet=3F2=3F
  1. Required ratio

The force between any two charged balls is FFF.

Hence,

Fnet:F=3F:F=3:1F_{\text{net}}:F=\sqrt3 F:F=\sqrt3:1Fnet:F=3F:F=3:1
