In the figure, a very large plane sheet of positive charge is shown. P1 and P2 are two points at distance l and 2l from the charge distribution. If σ\sigmaσ is the surface charge density, then the magnitude of electric fields E1 and E2 at P1 and P2 respectively are : JEE Main 2022 (Online) 25th June Morning Shift Physics - Electrostatics Question 120 English

Correct answer: C

  1. Electric field due to a very large plane sheet of charge

For an infinite (or very large) plane sheet with uniform surface charge density σ\sigmaσ, the electric field on either side is constant and is given by

E=σ2ε0E = \frac{\sigma}{2\varepsilon_0}E=2ε0σ

This result is obtained using Gauss's law.

  1. Using Gauss's law briefly

Choose a cylindrical Gaussian surface (pillbox) of cross-sectional area AAA passing through the sheet.

  • Total flux through the two flat faces: Φ=EA+EA=2EA\Phi = EA + EA = 2EAΦ=EA+EA=2EA
  • Charge enclosed: qenc=σAq_{\text{enc}} = \sigma Aqenc=σA

By Gauss's law,

2EA=σAε02EA = \frac{\sigma A}{\varepsilon_0}2EA=ε0σA

So,

E=σ2ε0E = \frac{\sigma}{2\varepsilon_0}E=2ε0σ

  1. Apply at points P1P_1P1 and P2P_2P2

Since the field of an infinite plane sheet does not depend on distance from the sheet,

  • at P1P_1P1 (distance lll): E1=σ2ε0E_1 = \frac{\sigma}{2\varepsilon_0}E1=2ε0σ
  • at P2P_2P2 (distance 2l2l2l): E2=σ2ε0E_2 = \frac{\sigma}{2\varepsilon_0}E2=2ε0σ

Thus,

E1=E2=σ2ε0E_1 = E_2 = \frac{\sigma}{2\varepsilon_0}E1=E2=2ε0σ

  1. Check options
