  1. Dynamic resistance of a diode

For a diode, the dynamic (AC) resistance at a point on the forward-bias I-V curve is

rd=dVdIr_d = \frac{dV}{dI}rd​=dIdV​

On a graph of III vs VVV, this is the reciprocal of the slope:

rd=1dIdVr_d = \frac{1}{\frac{dI}{dV}}rd​=dVdI​1​

So, the steeper the III-VVV curve, the smaller the dynamic resistance.


  1. Use the given graph qualitatively

From the forward-bias characteristic of a p-n junction diode, current increases very rapidly with voltage.

At V=2 VV = 2\,\text{V}V=2V, the curve is much less steep than at V=4 VV = 4\,\text{V}V=4V. Thus,

  • slope at 2 V2\,\text{V}2V is smaller
  • slope at 4 V4\,\text{V}4V is larger
  • therefore dynamic resistance at 2 V2\,\text{V}2V is larger than at 4 V4\,\text{V}4V

Hence,

rd(2 V):rd(4 V)>1r_d(2\,\text{V}) : r_d(4\,\text{V}) > 1rd​(2V):rd​(4V)>1


  1. Estimate from diode equation

For a forward biased diode,

I∝eVηVTI \propto e^{\frac{V}{\eta V_T}}I∝eηVT​V​

and dynamic resistance is

rd=dVdI=ηVTIr_d = \frac{dV}{dI} = \frac{\eta V_T}{I}rd​=dIdV​=IηVT​​

So,

rd∝1Ir_d \propto \frac{1}{I}rd​∝I1​

Therefore,

rd(2)rd(4)=I(4)I(2)\frac{r_d(2)}{r_d(4)} = \frac{I(4)}{I(2)}rd​(4)rd​(2)​=I(2)I(4)​

From the plotted curve, current at 4 V4\,\text{V}4V is about 5 times the current at 2 V2\,\text{V}2V, so

rd(2):rd(4)=5:1r_d(2) : r_d(4) = 5 : 1rd​(2):rd​(4)=5:1
