An electromagnetic wave is transporting energy in the negative zzz direction. At a certain point and certain time the direction of electric field of the wave is along positive yyy direction. What will be the direction of the magnetic field of the wave at that point and instant?

  1. For an electromagnetic wave, the direction of propagation is given by the Poynting vector:

S⃗∝E⃗×B⃗\vec{S} \propto \vec{E} \times \vec{B}S∝E×B

So,

E⃗×B⃗=direction of wave propagation\vec{E} \times \vec{B} = \text{direction of wave propagation}E×B=direction of wave propagation

  1. Given:
  • Wave is travelling in the negative zzz direction
  • Electric field E⃗\vec{E}E is along positive yyy direction

Thus,

j^×B⃗=−k^\hat{j} \times \vec{B} = -\hat{k}j^​×B=−k^

j^×i^=−k^\hat{j} \times \hat{i} = -\hat{k}j^​×i^=−k^

This matches exactly.

So,
