In photoelectric experiment energy of 2.48 eV2.48 \mathrm{~eV}2.48 eV irradiates a photo sensitive material. The stopping potential was measured to be 0.5 V0.5 \mathrm{~V}0.5 V. Work function of the photo sensitive material is :
  1. A
    1.98 eV
  2. B
    1.68 eV
  3. C

Correct answer: A

  1. Use Einstein’s photoelectric equation

    Kmax⁡=hν−ϕK_{\max} = h\nu - \phiKmax=hν−ϕ

    where:

    • hν=2.48 eVh\nu = 2.48\,\text{eV}hν=2.48eV is the energy of incident photon,
    • ϕ\phiϕ is the work function,
    • Kmax⁡K_{\max}Kmax is the maximum kinetic energy of emitted electrons.
  2. Relate stopping potential to maximum kinetic energy

    Kmax⁡=eV0K_{\max} = eV_0Kmax=eV0

    Since the stopping potential is V0=0.5 VV_0 = 0.5\,\text{V}V0=0.5V, the maximum kinetic energy is

    Kmax⁡=0.5 eVK_{\max} = 0.5\,\text{eV}Kmax=0.5eV

    because 1 eV1\,\text{eV}1eV corresponds to an electron accelerated through 1 V1\,\text{V}1V.

  3. Find the work function

    From

    ϕ=hν−Kmax⁡\phi = h\nu - K_{\max}ϕ=hν−Kmax

    substitute the values:

    ϕ=2.48−0.5=1.98 eV\phi = 2.48 - 0.5 = 1.98\,\text{eV}ϕ=2.48−0.5=1.98eV

  4. Match with the options

    • A: 1.98 eV1.98\,\text{eV}1.98eV ✅
    • B: 1.68 eV1.68\,\text{eV}1.68eV ❌
    • C: 2.48 eV2.48\,\text{eV}2.48eV ❌
    • D: 0.5 eV0.5\,\text{eV}0.5eV ❌

Therefore, the work function of the material is:

1.98 eV\boxed{1.98\,\text{eV}}1.98eV
