JEE MainPhysicsDual Nature of RadiationMCQ+4 / −1
Two sources of light emit X-rays of wavelength 1 nm and visible light of wavelength 500 nm, respectively. Both the sources emit light of the same power 200 W. The ratio of the number density of photons of X-rays to the number density of photons of the visible light of the given wavelengths is :
  1. A
    1500{1 \over {500}}5001
  2. B
    500
  3. C
    250
  4. D
    1250{1 \over {250}}2501

Correct answer: A

  1. Photon energy formula

For light of wavelength λ\lambdaλ, the energy of one photon is

E=hcλE = \frac{hc}{\lambda}E=λhc

So, shorter wavelength means higher energy per photon.

  1. Given data
  • X-rays: λX=1 nm\lambda_X = 1\,\text{nm}λX=1nm
  • Visible light: λV=500 nm\lambda_V = 500\,\text{nm}λV=500nm
  • Both sources have same power: P=200 WP = 200\,\text{W}P=200W
  1. Photon emission rate

Number of photons emitted per second is

N=PE=Phc/λ=PλhcN = \frac{P}{E} = \frac{P}{hc/\lambda} = \frac{P\lambda}{hc}N=EP=hc/λP=hcPλ

Thus,

N∝λN \propto \lambdaN∝λ

when power is same.

So,

NXNV=λXλV=1500\frac{N_X}{N_V} = \frac{\lambda_X}{\lambda_V} = \frac{1}{500}NVNX=λVλX=5001

  1. Relating to number density

For radiation traveling in space,

number density=number crossing per secondvolume crossing per second\text{number density} = \frac{\text{number crossing per second}}{\text{volume crossing per second}}number density=volume crossing per secondnumber crossing per second

Since both travel with speed ccc, number density is proportional to photon flux, hence proportional to photon emission rate for equal power beams.

Therefore,

nXnV=NXNV=1500\frac{n_X}{n_V} = \frac{N_X}{N_V} = \frac{1}{500}nVnX=NVNX=5001

  1. Option check
  • A: 1500\frac{1}{500}5001 ✅
  • B: 500500500 ❌
  • C: 250250250 ❌
  • D: 1250\frac{1}{250}2501 ❌

Therefore, the correct answer is:

1500\boxed{\frac{1}{500}}5001
