If the de Broglie wavelengths associated with a proton and an α\alphaα-particle are equal, then the ratio of velocities of the proton and the α\alphaα-particle will be :
  1. A
    4 : 1
  2. B
    2 : 1
  3. C
    1 : 2
  4. D

Correct answer: A

  1. Use de Broglie wavelength relation

    The de Broglie wavelength is λ=hp=hmv\lambda = \frac{h}{p} = \frac{h}{mv}λ=ph=mvh for non-relativistic particles.

  2. Given condition

The proton and the α\alphaα-particle have equal de Broglie wavelengths: λp=λα\lambda_p = \lambda_\alphaλp=λα

    Therefore, hmpvp=hmαvα\frac{h}{m_p v_p} = \frac{h}{m_\alpha v_\alpha}mpvph=mαvαh

    Cancelling hhh, mpvp=mαvαm_p v_p = m_\alpha v_\alphampvp=mαvα

  3. Use mass of the α\alphaα-particle

    An α\alphaα-particle has approximately 4 times the mass of a proton: mα=4mpm_\alpha = 4m_pmα=4mp

    Substituting, mpvp=4mpvαm_p v_p = 4m_p v_\alphampvp=4mpvα

    Cancelling mpm_pmp, vp=4vαv_p = 4v_\alphavp=4vα

  4. Find the ratio

    Hence, vp:vα=4:1v_p : v_\alpha = 4 : 1vp:vα=4:1

  5. Option check

    • A: 4:14:14:1 ✅
    • B: 2:12:12:1 ❌
    • C: 1:21:21:2 ❌
    • D: 1:41:41:4 ❌

Therefore, the correct answer is A.
