Sodium and copper have work functions 2.3eV2.3eV2.3eV and 4.5eV4.5eV4.5eV respectively. Then the ratio of the wavelengths is nearest to
  1. A
    1:21:21:2
  2. B
    4:14:14:1
  3. C
    2:12:12:1
  4. D

Correct answer: C

  1. Use the threshold condition for photoelectric emission

    The threshold wavelength λ0\lambda_0λ0 is related to the work function ϕ\phiϕ by

    ϕ=hcλ0\phi = \frac{hc}{\lambda_0}ϕ=λ0hc

    Hence,

    λ0=hcϕ\lambda_0 = \frac{hc}{\phi}λ0=ϕhc
  2. Apply to sodium and copper

    For sodium:

    ϕNa=2.3 eV\phi_{\text{Na}} = 2.3\,\text{eV}ϕNa=2.3eV

    For copper:

    ϕCu=4.5 eV\phi_{\text{Cu}} = 4.5\,\text{eV}ϕCu=4.5eV

    Since λ∝1ϕ\lambda \propto \dfrac{1}{\phi}λ∝ϕ1,

    λNaλCu=ϕCuϕNa=4.52.3≈1.96\frac{\lambda_{\text{Na}}}{\lambda_{\text{Cu}}} = \frac{\phi_{\text{Cu}}}{\phi_{\text{Na}}} = \frac{4.5}{2.3} \approx 1.96λCuλNa=ϕNaϕCu=2.34.5≈1.96
  3. Find the nearest ratio

    1.96≈21.96 \approx 21.96≈2

    So,

    λNa:λCu≈2:1\lambda_{\text{Na}} : \lambda_{\text{Cu}} \approx 2:1λNa:λCu≈2:1
  4. Check options

    • A: 1:21:21:2 ❌
    • B: 4:14:14:1 ❌
    • C: 2:12:12:1 ✅
    • D: 1:41:41:4 ❌

Therefore, the correct option is C.
