Correct answer: B

  1. Find the resistance of the lamp in working condition (hot filament).

For a lamp rated 100 W100\text{ W}100 W at 200 V200\text{ V}200 V,

P=V2RhotP = \frac{V^2}{R_{\text{hot}}}P=RhotV2

So,

Rhot=V2P=(200)2100=40000100=400 ΩR_{\text{hot}} = \frac{V^2}{P} = \frac{(200)^2}{100} = \frac{40000}{100} = 400\,\OmegaRhot=PV2=100(200)2=10040000=400Ω

  1. Use the given relation between hot and cold resistance.

The hot resistance is about 101010 times the cold resistance:

Rhot=10RcoldR_{\text{hot}} = 10R_{\text{cold}}Rhot=10Rcold

Hence,

Rcold=Rhot10=40010=40 ΩR_{\text{cold}} = \frac{R_{\text{hot}}}{10} = \frac{400}{10} = 40\,\OmegaRcold=10Rhot=10400=40Ω

  1. Match with the options.

Rcold=40 ΩR_{\text{cold}} = 40\,\OmegaRcold=40Ω

So the correct option is B.
