JEE MainPhysicsCircular MotionMCQ+4 / −1
A bob of mass mmm is suspended at a point OOO by a light string of length lll and left to perform vertical motion (circular) as shown in figure. Initially, by applying horizontal velocity v0v_0v0 at the point ' A ', the string becomes slack when, the bob reaches at the point 'DDD '. The ratio of the kinetic energy of the bob at the points B and C is ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}}. JEE Main 2025 (Online) 22nd January Morning Shift Physics - Circular Motion Question 8 English

Correct answer: D

  1. Interpret the motion

The bob moves in a vertical circle of radius lll.

Let us take the usual positions:

    • AAA = lowest point
    • BBB = point at angle 90∘90^\circ90∘ from AAA (side point)
    • CCC = top point
    • DDD = point where string just becomes slack

Since the string becomes slack at point DDD, the tension there is zero.

  2. Condition for slackness

At any point making angle θ\thetaθ from the lowest point, radial equation is T−mgcos⁡θ=mv2lT - mg\cos\theta = \frac{mv^2}{l}T−mgcosθ=lmv2 (with proper sign convention toward center).

    At the top point CCC, for the string to just become slack, TC=0T_C = 0TC=0 so mvC2l=mg\frac{mv_C^2}{l} = mglmvC2=mg vC2=glv_C^2 = glvC2=gl

    Hence kinetic energy at CCC is KC=12mvC2=12mglK_C = \frac{1}{2}m v_C^2 = \frac{1}{2}mglKC=21mvC2=21mgl

  3. Find speed at point BBB using energy conservation

From BBB to CCC, the bob rises by height lll.

    Therefore, KB=KC+mglK_B = K_C + mglKB=KC+mgl

    Substitute KC=12mglK_C = \frac{1}{2}mglKC=21mgl: KB=12mgl+mgl=32mglK_B = \frac{1}{2}mgl + mgl = \frac{3}{2}mglKB=21mgl+mgl=23mgl

  4. Required ratio

    KBKC=32mgl12mgl=3\frac{K_B}{K_C} = \frac{\frac{3}{2}mgl}{\frac{1}{2}mgl} = 3KCKB=21mgl23mgl=3

  5. Check options

    • A: 444 ✗
    • B: 111 ✗
    • C: 222 ✗
    • D: 333 ✓

So, the correct ratio is 333.
