Two bodies A and B of masses 5 kg and 8 kg are moving such that the momentum of body B is twice that of the body A. The ratio of their kinetic energies will be :
  1. A
    4 : 5
  2. B
    2 : 5
  3. C
    5 : 4
  4. D
    5 : 2

Correct answer: B

  1. Let the momenta of bodies AAA and BBB be pAp_ApA and pBp_BpB respectively.

    Given: pB=2pAp_B = 2p_ApB=2pA

  2. Kinetic energy in terms of momentum is: K=p22mK = \frac{p^2}{2m}K=2mp2

  3. So for body AAA: KA=pA22mA=pA22⋅5=pA210K_A = \frac{p_A^2}{2m_A} = \frac{p_A^2}{2\cdot 5} = \frac{p_A^2}{10}KA=2mApA2=2⋅5pA2=10pA2

  4. For body BBB: KB=pB22mB=(2pA)22⋅8=4pA216=pA24K_B = \frac{p_B^2}{2m_B} = \frac{(2p_A)^2}{2\cdot 8} = \frac{4p_A^2}{16} = \frac{p_A^2}{4}KB=2mBpB2=2⋅8(2pA)2=164pA2=4pA2

  5. Now find the ratio: KA:KB=pA210:pA24=110:14K_A : K_B = \frac{p_A^2}{10} : \frac{p_A^2}{4} = \frac{1}{10} : \frac{1}{4}KA:KB=10pA2:4pA2=101:41

    Multiply both terms by 202020: KA:KB=2:5K_A : K_B = 2 : 5KA:KB=2:5

  6. Therefore, the ratio of their kinetic energies is: 2:5\boxed{2:5}2:5

  7. Checking options:

    • A: 4:54:54:5 ❌
    • B: 2:52:52:5 ✅
    • C: 5:45:45:4 ❌
    • D: 5:25:25:2 ❌

Hence, the correct option is B.
