Center of Mass question

2022 · 28 Jul · Shift 1 · Q49

JEE MainPhysicsCenter of MassMCQ+4 / −1
In two different experiments, an object of mass 5 kg5 \mathrm{~kg}5 kg moving with a speed of 25 ms−125 \mathrm{~ms}^{-1}25 ms−1 hits two different walls and comes to rest within (i) 3 second, (ii) 5 seconds, respectively. Choose the correct option out of the following :
  1. A
    Impulse and average force acting on the object will be same for both the cases.
  2. B
    Impulse will be same for both the cases but the average force will be different.
  3. C
    Average force will be same for both the cases but the impulse will be different.
  4. D
    Average force and impulse will be different for both the cases.

Correct answer: B

  1. Given data
  • Mass of object: m=5 kgm = 5\,\text{kg}m=5kg
  • Initial speed: u=25 m s−1u = 25\,\text{m s}^{-1}u=25m s−1
  • Final speed: v=0v = 0v=0
  • Two stopping times:
    • Case (i): t1=3 st_1 = 3\,\text{s}t1=3s
    • Case (ii): t2=5 st_2 = 5\,\text{s}t2=5s
  1. Find change in momentum

Impulse is equal to change in momentum:

J=Δp=m(v−u)J = \Delta p = m(v-u)J=Δp=m(v−u)

J=5(0−25)=−125 kg m s−1J = 5(0-25) = -125\,\text{kg m s}^{-1}J=5(0−25)=−125kg m s−1

So, in both cases, the magnitude of impulse is

∣J∣=125 N s|J| = 125\,\text{N s}∣J∣=125N s

Since the initial and final velocities are the same in both experiments, the impulse is same in both cases.

  1. Find average force in each case

Average force is given by:

Favg=ΔpΔtF_{\text{avg}} = \frac{\Delta p}{\Delta t}Favg=ΔtΔp

Case (i):

Favg,1=−1253 NF_{\text{avg,1}} = \frac{-125}{3}\,\text{N}Favg,1=3−125N

Magnitude:

∣Favg,1∣=1253≈41.7 N|F_{\text{avg,1}}| = \frac{125}{3} \approx 41.7\,\text{N}∣Favg,1∣=3125≈41.7N

Case (ii):

Favg,2=−1255=−25 NF_{\text{avg,2}} = \frac{-125}{5} = -25\,\text{N}Favg,2=5−125=−25N

Magnitude:

∣Favg,2∣=25 N|F_{\text{avg,2}}| = 25\,\text{N}∣Favg,2∣=25N

Thus, the average force is different in the two cases.

  1. Evaluate options
  • A: Impulse and average force same in both cases. ❌ False
  • B: Impulse same, average force different. ✅ True
  • C: Average force same, impulse different. ❌ False
  • D: Both different. ❌ False
  1. Final answer

The correct option is B.
