The mass number of nucleus having radius equal to half of the radius of nucleus with mass number 192 is :
  1. A
    32
  2. B
    24
  3. C
    20
  4. D

Correct answer: B

  1. Use the nuclear radius relation

    The radius of a nucleus is given by R=R0A1/3R = R_0 A^{1/3}R=R0A1/3 where:

    • RRR = nuclear radius
    • R0R_0R0 = constant
    • AAA = mass number
  2. Given condition

    Let the required nucleus have mass number AAA.

    The nucleus with mass number 192192192 has radius R192=R0(192)1/3R_{192} = R_0 (192)^{1/3}R192=R0(192)1/3

    The required nucleus has radius equal to half of this: R=12R192R = \frac{1}{2} R_{192}R=21R192

  3. Apply the formula

    R0A1/3=12R0(192)1/3R_0 A^{1/3} = \frac{1}{2} R_0 (192)^{1/3}R0A1/3=21R0(192)1/3

    Cancel R0R_0R0: A1/3=12(192)1/3A^{1/3} = \frac{1}{2}(192)^{1/3}A1/3=21(192)1/3

  4. Cube both sides

    A=(12)3×192A = \left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^3 \times 192A=(21)3×192

    A=18×192=24A = \frac{1}{8} \times 192 = 24A=81×192=24

  5. Match with options

    The correct option is: 24\boxed{24}24

    So, Option B is correct.
