All the students of a class performed poorly in Mathematics. The teacher decided to give grace marks of 10 to each of the students. Which of the following statistical measures will not change even after the grace marks were given?

  1. Let the original marks of the students be x1,x2,x3,…,xn.x_1, x_2, x_3, \dots, x_n.x1​,x2​,x3​,…,xn​.

    After giving grace marks of 101010 to each student, the new marks become x1+10,x2+10,x3+10,…,xn+10.x_1+10, x_2+10, x_3+10, \dots, x_n+10.x1​+10,x2​+10,x3​+10,…,xn​+10.

  2. Now check each statistical measure:

    (A) Mean

    Original mean: xˉ=x1+x2+⋯+xnn\bar{x} = \frac{x_1+x_2+\cdots+x_n}{n}xˉ=nx1​+x2​+⋯+xn​​

    New mean: xˉnew=(x1+10)+(x2+10)+⋯+(xn+10)n\bar{x}_{new} = \frac{(x_1+10)+(x_2+10)+\cdots+(x_n+10)}{n}xˉnew​=n(x1​+10)+(x2​+10)+⋯+(xn​+10)​ =x1+x2+⋯+xnn+10=xˉ+10= \frac{x_1+x_2+\cdots+x_n}{n} + 10 = \bar{x}+10=nx1​+x2​+⋯+xn​​+10=xˉ+10

    So, the mean changes.

    (B) Median

    Adding the same number 101010 to every observation shifts the entire ordered data by 101010. Hence the median also increases by 101010.

    So, the median changes.

    (C) Mode

    The value occurring most frequently, say mmm, becomes m+10m+10m+10 after grace marks are added. So, the mode changes.

    (D) Variance

    Variance depends on deviations from the mean. If each observation is increased by the same constant, then each deviation from the mean remains unchanged: [(xi+10)−(xˉ+10)]=xi−xˉ[(x_i+10) - (\bar{x}+10)] = x_i - \bar{x}[(xi​+10)−(xˉ+10)]=xi​−xˉ

    Therefore, Variance of (xi+10)=Variance of xi.\text{Variance of }(x_i+10) = \text{Variance of }x_i.Variance of (xi​+10)=Variance of xi​.

    So, the variance does not change.

  3. Therefore, the statistical measure that remains unchanged is Variance.\boxed{\text{Variance}}.Variance​.

  4. Comparing with the stored correct answer:
