If the letters of the word MATHS are permuted and all possible words so formed are arranged as in a dictionary with serial numbers, then the serial number of the word THAMS is :

  1. Arrange the letters alphabetically

The word is MATHS. Its letters are: M,A,T,H,SM, A, T, H, SM,A,T,H,S

In alphabetical order: A,H,M,S,TA, H, M, S, TA,H,M,S,T

We need the dictionary rank of the word THAMS.


  1. Count words before THAMS

We count how many valid permutations come before THAMS in dictionary order.

Step 1: First letter = T

Letters smaller than TTT available are: A,H,M,SA, H, M, SA,H,M,S

For each choice, the remaining 444 letters can be arranged in: 4!=244! = 244!=24 ways.

So number of words before those starting with TTT is: 4×24=964 \times 24 = 964×24=96


Step 2: Fix first letter TTT, second letter = H

Remaining letters are: A,H,M,SA, H, M, SA,H,M,S After fixing TTT, available letters are: A,H,M,SA, H, M, SA,H,M,S

Now second letter is HHH. Letters smaller than HHH among available letters: AAA

For this choice, remaining 333 letters can be arranged in: 3!=63! = 63!=6 ways.

Total so far: 96+6=10296 + 6 = 10296+6=102


Step 3: Fix THTHTH, third letter = A

Remaining letters are: A,M,SA, M, SA,M,S

The third letter is AAA. No letter smaller than AAA is available. So add: 000

Step 4: Fix THATHATHA, fourth letter = M

The fourth letter is MMM. No letter smaller than MMM is available. So add: 000
