Correct answer: B

  1. Moseley’s law

Henry Moseley found that for characteristic X-rays, the frequency ν\nuν is related to atomic number ZZZ by

ν=a(Z−b)\sqrt{\nu} = a(Z-b)ν=a(Z−b)

where aaa and bbb are constants for a given series.

Equivalently,

ν=k(Z−b)2\nu = k(Z-b)^2ν=k(Z−b)2

So:

  • ν\nuν is not linear in ZZZ.
  • ν\sqrt{\nu}ν is linear in ZZZ.
  1. What graph should represent Moseley’s observation?

Since the question states the axes involve frequency ν\nuν and atomic number ZZZ, the correct observation is:

ν∝(Z−b)2\nu \propto (Z-b)^2ν∝(Z−b)2

Thus the graph of ν\nuν versus ZZZ must be an upward-opening parabola.

If the graph were ν\sqrt{\nu}ν versus ZZZ, it would be a straight line.

  1. Selecting the option

Among the given options, the one corresponding to Moseley’s observation is Option B.

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Stored correct answer: B

My derived answer: B

Hence, they agree.
