Which of the following statements are correct? (A) The electronic configuration of Cr is [Ar] 3d5 4s1. (B) The magnetic quantum number may have a negative value. (C) In the ground state of an atom, the orbitals are filled in order of their increasing energies. (D) The total number of nodes are given by n −-− 2. Choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
    (A), (C) and (D) only
  2. B
    (A) and (B) only
  3. C
    (A) and (C) only
  4. D
    (A), (B) and (C) only

Correct answer: D

  1. Check statement (A): Electronic configuration of Cr

Chromium has atomic number 242424.

Its expected configuration by simple Aufbau filling would be: [Ar] 3d44s2[Ar]\,3d^4 4s^2[Ar]3d44s2 But chromium is an exception due to extra stability of half-filled ddd-subshell: [Ar] 3d54s1[Ar]\,3d^5 4s^1[Ar]3d54s1 So, (A) is correct.

  1. Check statement (B): Magnetic quantum number may have a negative value

The magnetic quantum number mlm_lml can take values: ml=−l,−(l−1),…,0,…,+(l−1),+lm_l = -l, -(l-1), \dots, 0, \dots, +(l-1), +lml=−l,−(l−1),…,0,…,+(l−1),+l Hence it can definitely be negative.

So, (B) is correct.

  1. Check statement (C): In ground state, orbitals are filled in order of increasing energies

This is the Aufbau principle: in the ground state, electrons occupy orbitals in order of increasing energy.

So, (C) is correct.

  1. Check statement (D): Total number of nodes are given by n−2n-2n−2

For an orbital:

  • Total number of nodes =n−1= n-1=n−1
  • Angular nodes =l= l=l
  • Radial nodes =n−l−1= n-l-1=n−l−1

Thus total nodes are: l+(n−l−1)=n−1l + (n-l-1) = n-1l+(n−l−1)=n−1 So statement (D) saying total nodes are n−2n-2n−2 is incorrect.

  1. Conclusion

Correct statements are: (A), (B), and (C)\text{(A), (B), and (C)}(A), (B), and (C)

Therefore, the correct option is: D\boxed{\text{D}}D
