Correct answer: C

  1. Principle used

A salt gives a basic solution in water if it is formed from:

  • a strong base + weak acid r basic salt, or
  • if one of its ions undergoes hydrolysis to produce OH−OH^-OH− strongly.

A salt gives an acidic solution if it is formed from:

  • a strong acid + weak base, or
  • a highly charged metal cation hydrolyses water to produce H+H^+H+.

We examine each option.

  1. Option A: Pb(CH3COO)2Pb(CH_3COO)_2Pb(CH3COO)2

This salt contains:

  • Pb2+Pb^{2+}Pb2+ : cation of the weak base Pb(OH)2Pb(OH)_2Pb(OH)2-type metal hydroxide; metal cations like Pb2+Pb^{2+}Pb2+ undergo hydrolysis and tend to make solution acidic.
  • CH3COO−CH_3COO^-CH3COO− : conjugate base of weak acid CH3COOHCH_3COOHCH3COOH; this tends to make solution basic.

So both ions hydrolyse in opposite directions. However, Pb2+Pb^{2+}Pb2+ is a fairly polarizing metal ion and hydrolysis of the cation is significant. Hence this salt is not strongly basic.

  1. Option B: Al(CN)3Al(CN)_3Al(CN)3

This salt contains:

  • Al3+Al^{3+}Al3+ : very small, highly charged cation; it hydrolyses strongly and makes solution acidic.
  • CN−CN^-CN− : conjugate base of weak acid HCN, so it makes solution basic.

Now compare strengths:

  • Al3+Al^{3+}Al3+ hydrolysis is very strong.
  • Though CN−CN^-CN− is basic, the strong acidic hydrolysis of Al3+Al^{3+}Al3+ dominates.

Therefore, aqueous solution of Al(CN)3Al(CN)_3Al(CN)3 is not the most basic; in fact it tends toward acidity due to strong hydrolysis of Al3+Al^{3+}Al3+.

  1. Option C: CH3COOKCH_3COOKCH3COOK

This salt is formed from:

  • KOHKOHKOH = strong base
  • CH3COOHCH_3COOHCH3COOH = weak acid

Thus:

  • K+K^+K+ does not hydrolyse.
  • CH3COO−CH_3COO^-CH3COO− hydrolyses as: CH3COO−+H2O⇌CH3COOH+OH−CH_3COO^- + H_2O \rightleftharpoons CH_3COOH + OH^-CH3COO−+H2O⇌CH3COOH+OH−

So the solution is definitely basic.

Since there is no acidic cation present, the basicity is not opposed by cation hydrolysis.

  1. Option D: FeCl3FeCl_3FeCl3

This salt is formed from:

  • Fe(OH)3Fe(OH)_3Fe(OH)3-type weak base cation Fe3+Fe^{3+}Fe3+
  • strong acid HClHClHCl

Fe3+Fe^{3+}Fe3+ hydrolyses strongly: [Fe(H2O)6]3+⇌[Fe(H2O)5OH]2++H+[Fe(H_2O)_6]^{3+} \rightleftharpoons [Fe(H_2O)_5OH]^{2+} + H^+[Fe(H2O)6]3+⇌[Fe(H2O)5OH]2++H+

Hence solution is acidic, not basic.

  1. Final comparison
  • Pb(CH3COO)2Pb(CH_3COO)_2Pb(CH3COO)2 : mixed hydrolysis, not strongly basic
  • Al(CN)3Al(CN)_3Al(CN)3 : strongly hydrolysing acidic cation present
  • CH3COOKCH_3COOKCH3COOK : salt of weak acid and strong base, clearly basic
  • FeCl3FeCl_3FeCl3 : acidic

Therefore, the most basic salt in aqueous solution is: CH3COOK\boxed{CH_3COOK}CH3COOK

So the correct option is C.
