Correct answer: 3

  1. Identify the complex ion in potassium ferrocyanide

    Potassium ferrocyanide is: K4[Fe(CN)6]K_4[Fe(CN)_6]K4[Fe(CN)6]

So the coordination entity is: [Fe(CN)6]4−[Fe(CN)_6]^{4-}[Fe(CN)6]4−

  2. Find oxidation state of iron

Let oxidation state of Fe be xxx.

Each CN−CN^-CN− ligand has charge −1-1−1, so total ligand charge is −6-6−6. Overall charge on the complex is −4-4−4.

    Therefore, x−6=−4x-6=-4x−6=−4 x=+2x=+2x=+2

    So iron is: Fe2+Fe^{2+}Fe2+

  3. Find the d-electron configuration of Fe2+Fe^{2+}Fe2+

Atomic number of Fe is 262626.

    Neutral Fe: [Ar]3d64s2[Ar]3d^64s^2[Ar]3d64s2

For Fe2+Fe^{2+}Fe2+, remove two electrons from 4s4s4s first: Fe2+=[Ar]3d6Fe^{2+}=[Ar]3d^6Fe2+=[Ar]3d6

So it is a d6d^6d6 system.

  4. Determine strong field or weak field

The ligand CN−CN^-CN− is a strong field ligand. Therefore, [Fe(CN)6]4−[Fe(CN)_6]^{4-}[Fe(CN)6]4− is a low-spin octahedral complex.

  5. Fill electrons in octahedral crystal field

In an octahedral field, the ddd orbitals split into:

    • lower energy t2gt_{2g}t2g
    • higher energy ege_geg

    For low-spin d6d^6d6: t2g6eg0t_{2g}^6 e_g^0t2g6eg0

  6. Count pairs of electrons in t2gt_{2g}t2g

    The t2gt_{2g}t2g set has 3 orbitals, and 666 electrons occupy them as: ↑↓  ↑↓  ↑↓\uparrow\downarrow\; \uparrow\downarrow\; \uparrow\downarrow↑↓↑↓↑↓

Hence, number of electron pairs in the t2gt_{2g}t2g set is: 333

  7. Comparison with stored answer

    Derived answer = 333

    Stored correct answer = 333

    Hence, both agree.
