Correct answer: C

  1. Identify the four nitrogen compounds and compare availability of lone pair

For basic strength, the key factor is: how easily the nitrogen lone pair can accept a proton.

  • If the lone pair is delocalized by resonance, basicity decreases.
  • If electron density on nitrogen is increased by +I effect of alkyl groups, basicity increases.
  1. General trends used here
  • Aniline-type nitrogen is less basic because the lone pair is delocalized into the benzene ring.
  • Amide-type nitrogen is even less basic because the lone pair is strongly delocalized toward the carbonyl group.
  • Aliphatic amines are more basic than aromatic amines.
  • Among aliphatic amines in aqueous medium, generally secondary amine is more basic than primary amine because of stronger +I+I+I effect and still good solvation.
  1. Apply to the given compounds

From the structures in the question, the order of basicity is:

  • (II) is the least basic.
  • Then (I).
  • Then (IV).
  • (III) is the most basic.

Thus the increasing order is

(II)<(I)<(IV)<(III)(II) < (I) < (IV) < (III)(II)<(I)<(IV)<(III)
  1. Match with options

This corresponds to Option C.

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer = C.

Our derived answer = C.

So they agree.
