We need the decreasing order of hydrogen bonding in:

  • AAA = liquid water
  • BBB = ice
  • CCC = impure water

So we compare the extent/strength of hydrogen-bonded structure in each case.

  1. Hydrogen bonding in ice

In ice, water molecules are arranged in a highly ordered open lattice. Each water molecule forms the maximum possible hydrogen bonds in the solid structure. Thus, hydrogen bonding is maximum in ice.

So, B>A or CB > A \text{ or } CB>A or C

  1. Hydrogen bonding in liquid water

In liquid water, hydrogen bonds are still present, but due to continuous molecular motion, many bonds keep breaking and reforming. Therefore, the extent of hydrogen bonding is less than in ice.

  1. Hydrogen bonding in impure water

Impurities generally disturb the hydrogen-bonded network of water. Hence, hydrogen bonding in impure water is usually less than in pure liquid water.
