Correct answer: D

  1. The compound with formula (C7H5O2)2(C_7H_5O_2)_2(C7H5O2)2 is benzoyl peroxide.

    Its structure is: C6H5CO−O−OCOC6H5C_6H_5CO-O-OCOC_6H_5C6H5CO−O−OCOC6H5

  2. On exposure to light (hν)(h\nu)(hν), the weak peroxide bond O−OO-OO−O undergoes homolytic cleavage.

So the first intermediate formed is: C6H5COO⋅C_6H_5COO\cdotC6H5COO⋅ This is called the benzoyloxy radical.

    The cleavage step is: C6H5CO−O−OCOC6H5→hν2 C6H5COO⋅C_6H_5CO-O-OCOC_6H_5 \xrightarrow{h\nu} 2\,C_6H_5COO\cdotC6H5CO−O−OCOC6H5hν2C6H5COO⋅

  3. The benzoyloxy radical is unstable and undergoes decarboxylation: C6H5COO⋅→C6H5⋅+CO2C_6H_5COO\cdot \rightarrow C_6H_5\cdot + CO_2C6H5COO⋅→C6H5⋅+CO2

  4. Since two benzoyloxy radicals are formed, overall: 2 C6H5COO⋅→2 C6H5⋅+2CO22\,C_6H_5COO\cdot \rightarrow 2\,C_6H_5\cdot + 2CO_22C6H5COO⋅→2C6H5⋅+2CO2

  5. Therefore, the intermediate XXX is: X=2 C6H5COO⋅X = 2\,C_6H_5COO\cdotX=2C6H5COO⋅ i.e. the benzoyloxy radical.

  6. Hence the correct option is the one corresponding to benzoyloxy radical.

Since the stored correct answer is D, and this matches the expected intermediate, I agree with the stored answer.
