Correct answer: 2

  1. Identify the complex in Fehling's reagent

    Fehling's reagent contains a deep blue complex of Cu2+\text{Cu}^{2+}Cu2+ with tartrate ions in alkaline medium.

    So, the metal ion responsible for magnetism is: Cu2+\text{Cu}^{2+}Cu2+

  2. Find the electronic configuration of Cu2+\text{Cu}^{2+}Cu2+

    Atomic number of Cu = 29.

    Neutral copper: Cu:[Ar] 3d104s1\text{Cu}: [Ar] \, 3d^{10}4s^1Cu:[Ar]3d104s1

    For Cu2+\text{Cu}^{2+}Cu2+, remove two electrons:

    • one from 4s4s4s
    • one from 3d3d3d

    Therefore, Cu2+:[Ar] 3d9\text{Cu}^{2+}: [Ar] \, 3d^9Cu2+:[Ar]3d9

  3. Count unpaired electrons

    In 3d93d^93d9, there is: n=1 unpaired electronn = 1 \text{ unpaired electron}n=1 unpaired electron

  4. Use spin-only magnetic moment formula

    μ=n(n+2) B.M.\mu = \sqrt{n(n+2)} \text{ B.M.}μ=n(n+2) B.M.

    Substituting n=1n=1n=1: μ=1(1+2)=3≈1.73 B.M.\mu = \sqrt{1(1+2)} = \sqrt{3} \approx 1.73 \text{ B.M.}μ=1(1+2)=3≈1.73 B.M.

  5. Nearest integer

    1.73≈21.73 \approx 21.73≈2

Therefore, the spin-only magnetic moment of the complex present in Fehling's reagent is 2 B.M. (nearest integer).
