Alcohols Phenols and Ethers question

2021 · 31 Aug · Shift 1 · Q7

JEE MainChemistryAlcohols Phenols and EthersMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). Assertion (A) : Treatment of bromine water with propene yields 1-bromopropan-2-ol. Reason (R) : Attack of water on bromonium ion follows Markovnikov rule and results in 1-bromopropan-2-ol. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)
  2. B
    (A) is false but (R) is true
  3. C
Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
  4. D
    (A) is true but (R) is false

Correct answer: C

  1. Reaction of propene with bromine water

When an alkene reacts with bromine water, it forms a bromonium ion intermediate first.

For propene, the double bond is: CH3−CH=CH2\mathrm{CH_3-CH=CH_2}CH3−CH=CH2

Addition of Br2\mathrm{Br_2}Br2 gives a cyclic bromonium ion.

Then water attacks this bromonium ion and opens the ring.

  1. Direction of attack by water

In the bromonium ion, the more substituted carbon bears greater partial positive character. Therefore, water attacks the more substituted carbon.

This is equivalent to Markovnikov-type orientation for halohydrin formation:

  • OH\mathrm{OH}OH goes to the more substituted carbon
  • Br\mathrm{Br}Br goes to the less substituted carbon

So for propene: CH3−CH=CH2→Br2/H2OCH3−CH(OH)−CH2Br\mathrm{CH_3-CH=CH_2 \xrightarrow{Br_2/H_2O} CH_3-CH(OH)-CH_2Br}CH3−CH=CH2Br2/H2OCH3−CH(OH)−CH2Br

This product is named: 1-bromopropan-2-ol\mathrm{1\text{-}bromopropan\text{-}2\text{-}ol}1-bromopropan-2-ol

Hence, Assertion (A) is true.

  1. Checking the Reason (R)

Reason says: attack of water on bromonium ion follows Markovnikov rule and results in 1\mathrm{1}1-bromopropan-2\mathrm{2}2-ol.

This is correct, because in halohydrin formation from an unsymmetrical alkene:

  • nucleophile (H2O\mathrm{H_2O}H2O) attacks the more substituted carbon
  • final product for propene is indeed 1\mathrm{1}1-bromopropan-2\mathrm{2}2-ol

So Reason (R) is also true.

  1. Does R explain A?

Yes. The assertion is true because water attacks the bromonium ion at the more substituted carbon, giving the observed product.

Therefore, (R) is the correct explanation of (A).

  1. Option check
  • A: Both true, but R not explanation of A → Incorrect
  • B: A false, R true → Incorrect
  • C: Both true and R is correct explanation of A → Correct
  • D: A true, R false → Incorrect

Final Answer

C\boxed{\text{C}}C
