Correct answer: A

  1. Key idea: ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) test

Ceric ammonium nitrate gives a positive test mainly with alcoholic −OH-OH−OH groups (especially aliphatic alcohols), producing a red/orange coloration.

It is not the usual positive test for:

    • phenolic −OH-OH−OH
    • carboxylic acid −OH-OH−OH
    • enolic −OH-OH−OH (generally not considered the characteristic positive case here)
  2. Interpretation of the product PPP

In this standard question type, the product PPP contains several kinds of oxygen-bearing groups labeled as (a),(b),(c),(d)(a), (b), (c), (d)(a),(b),(c),(d), and we are asked which labeled −OH-OH−OH group is responsible for the positive CAN test.

Since CAN test is given by an alcoholic hydroxyl group, among the labeled groups the one corresponding to an ordinary alcohol is (b)(b)(b) only.

  3. Checking options

    • A: (b)(b)(b) only →\rightarrow→ matches alcoholic −OH-OH−OH
    • B: (b)(b)(b) and (d)(d)(d) →\rightarrow→ incorrect if (d)(d)(d) is not an alcohol-type −OH-OH−OH
    • C: (c)(c)(c) and (d)(d)(d) →\rightarrow→ incorrect
    • D: (d)(d)(d) only →\rightarrow→ incorrect
  4. Final conclusion

The positive ceric ammonium nitrate test is due to the presence of (b)(b)(b) only.
