A glass capillary tube is of the shape of truncated cone with an apex angle α\alphaα so that its two ends have cross sections of different radii. When dipped in water vertically, water rises in it to a height h, where the radius of its cross section is b. If the surface tension of water is S, its density is ρ\rhoρ, and its contact angle with glass is θ\thetaθ, the value of h will be (g is the acceleration due to gravity) JEE Advanced 2014 Paper 2 Offline Physics - Properties of Matter Question 19 English

Correct answer: D

  1. Key idea: capillary rise is found by balancing forces

In a capillary tube, the upward vertical component of surface tension balances the weight of the liquid column.

  2. Geometry of the tube

The capillary is a truncated cone with apex angle α\alphaα.

Hence, the wall of the cone makes an angle α2\frac{\alpha}{2}2α with the axis of the tube.

At the level where the liquid rises, the radius of cross-section is given as bbb.

  3. Surface tension force

Surface tension acts tangentially to the liquid surface at the line of contact.

For an ordinary cylindrical tube, the vertical component is 2πrScos⁡θ2\pi r S \cos\theta2πrScosθ because the wall is parallel to the axis.

Here, the wall is inclined. Since the wall makes angle α/2\alpha/2α/2 with the vertical axis, the effective angle between the surface tension direction and the vertical changes.

    Therefore, the vertical component becomes 2πbScos⁡(θ+α2).2\pi b S \cos\left(\theta + \frac{\alpha}{2}\right).2πbScos(θ+2α).

  4. Weight of the liquid column

If the liquid rises to height hhh, then the weight of the liquid column is approximately πb2hρg.\pi b^2 h\rho g.πb2hρg.

  5. Force balance

    At equilibrium, 2πbScos⁡(θ+α2)=πb2hρg.2\pi b S \cos\left(\theta + \frac{\alpha}{2}\right)=\pi b^2 h\rho g.2πbScos(θ+2α)=πb2hρg.

    Cancel πb\pi bπb from both sides: 2Scos⁡(θ+α2)=bhρg.2S\cos\left(\theta + \frac{\alpha}{2}\right)=b h\rho g.2Scos(θ+2α)=bhρg.

    Hence, h=2Sbρgcos⁡(θ+α2).h=\frac{2S}{b\rho g}\cos\left(\theta + \frac{\alpha}{2}\right).h=bρg2Scos(θ+2α).

  6. Matching with options

    This corresponds to: 2Sbρgcos⁡(θ+α2)\boxed{\frac{2S}{b\rho g}\cos\left(\theta + \frac{\alpha}{2}\right)}bρg2Scos(θ+2α)

So the correct option is D.
