Electrical resistance of certain materials, known as superconductors, changes abruptly from a non-zero value to zero as their temperature is lowered below a critical temperature Tc(0). An interesting property of superconductors is that their critical temperature becomes smaller than Tc(0), if they are placed in a magnetic field, that is, the critical temperature Tc(B) is a function of the magnetic field strength B. The dependence of Tc(B) on B is shown in the figure.   1. Key physical fact

    For a superconductor, the resistance behaves as:

    • R≠0R \neq 0R=0 for T>Tc(B)T > T_c(B)T>Tc​(B)
    • R=0R = 0R=0 for T<Tc(B)T < T_c(B)T<Tc​(B)

    Also, the critical temperature decreases when magnetic field increases: B2>B1  ⟹  Tc(B2)<Tc(B1).B_2 > B_1 \implies T_c(B_2) < T_c(B_1).B2​>B1​⟹Tc​(B2​)<Tc​(B1​).

  2. Meaning for the RRR vs TTT graph

    Since B2B_2B2​ is larger than B1B_1B1​, superconductivity is destroyed more easily in field B2B_2B2​. Therefore the transition to zero resistance must occur at a lower temperature for B2B_2B2​ than for B1B_1B1​.

    So in the RRR–TTT plot:

    • the curve for B1B_1B1​ should drop to zero at a higher temperature,
    • the curve for B2B_2B2​ should drop to zero at a lower temperature.
  3. Relative positions of the two curves

    For temperatures between the two critical temperatures, Tc(B2)<T<Tc(B1),T_c(B_2) < T < T_c(B_1),Tc​(B2​)<T<Tc​(B1​), we have:

    • at B1B_1B1​: material is superconducting, so R=0R=0R=0,
    • at B2B_2B2​: material is still normal, so R>0R>0R>0.

    Hence the B2B_2B2​ curve must lie to the left/lower-temperature side of the B1B_1B1​ transition.
