Light guidance in an optical fibre can be understood by considering a structure comprising of thin solid glass cylinder of refractive index n1 surrounded by a medium of lower refractive index n2. The light guidance in the structure takes place due to successive total internal reflections at the interface of the media n1 and n2 as shown in the figure.   1. Meaning of numerical aperture

For an optical fibre-like structure, the numerical aperture is NA=sin⁡imNA = \sin i_mNA=sinim​ where imi_mim​ is the maximum incident angle (with the axis / allowed acceptance condition) for which the ray remains guided by total internal reflection.

So, a larger NANANA means the structure can accept and guide a wider range of rays.


  1. Given two structures joined longitudinally

We have two parts connected one after another:

  • first part with numerical aperture NA1NA_1NA1​
  • second part with numerical aperture NA2NA_2NA2​

and it is given that NA2<NA1NA_2 < NA_1NA2​<NA1​

This means the second structure accepts a smaller cone of rays than the first one.


  1. Condition for guidance in the combined structure

For light to be guided through the entire combined structure, a ray must be guided in:

  • the first section, and
  • the second section.
