  1. Find the oxidation state of nitrogen in each compound

We use the standard rules:

  • Hydrogen usually has oxidation state +1+1+1
  • Oxygen usually has oxidation state −2-2−2
  • Elements in free state have oxidation state 000
  • Sum of oxidation states equals the charge on the species

(i) HNO3HNO_3HNO3​

Let oxidation state of NNN be xxx.

(+1)+x+3(−2)=0(+1) + x + 3(-2) = 0(+1)+x+3(−2)=0 1+x−6=01 + x - 6 = 01+x−6=0 x=+5x = +5x=+5

So, in HNO3HNO_3HNO3​, nitrogen is +5+5+5.


(ii) NONONO

Let oxidation state of NNN be xxx.

x+(−2)=0x + (-2) = 0x+(−2)=0 x=+2x = +2x=+2

So, in NONONO, nitrogen is +2+2+2.


(iii) NH4ClNH_4ClNH4​Cl

This is better viewed as NH4+Cl−NH_4^+Cl^-NH4+​Cl−. Find oxidation state of NNN in NH4+NH_4^+NH4+​. Let it be xxx.

x+4(+1)=+1x + 4(+1) = +1x+4(+1)=+1 x+4=1x + 4 = 1x+4=1 x=−3x = -3x=−3

So, in NH4ClNH_4ClNH4​Cl, nitrogen is −3-3−3.


(iv) N2N_2N2​

N2N_2N2​ is an element in its free state.

Oxidation state of N=0\text{Oxidation state of } N = 0Oxidation state of N=0

So, in N2N_2N2​, nitrogen is 000.

The oxidation states are:
