A black body has maximum wavelength λ\lambdaλm at 2000 K. Its corresponding wavelength at 3000 K will be
  1. A
    32λm{3 \over 2}{\lambda _m}23λm
  2. B
    23λm{2 \over 3}{\lambda _m}32λm
  3. C
    1681λm{{16} \over {81}}{\lambda _m}8116λm
  4. D
    8116λm{{81} \over {16}}{\lambda _m}1681λm

Correct answer: B

According to Wein's displacement law,

λmT{\lambda _m}TλmT = 2.88 × 10–3

When T = 2000 K,

λm{\lambda _m}λm(2000) = 2.88 × 10–3   ....(1)

When T = 3000 K,

λm′\lambda _m^{'}λm′ (3000) = 2.88 × 10–3    ....(2)

Dividing (1) by (2),

23λmλm′=1{2 \over 3}{{{\lambda _m}} \over {\lambda _m^{'}}} = 132λm′λm=1

⇒λmλm′=32 \Rightarrow {{{\lambda _m}} \over {\lambda _m^{'}}} = {3 \over 2}⇒λm′λm=23

⇒λm′=23λm \Rightarrow \lambda _m^{'} = {2 \over 3}{\lambda _m}⇒λm′=32λm
