What would be the heart rate of a person if the cardiac output is 5L, blood volume in the ventricles at the end of diastole is 100 mL and at the end of ventricular systole is 50 mL ?
  1. A
    100 beats per minute
  2. B
    125 beats per minute
  3. C
    50 beats per minute
  4. D
    75 beats per minute
View written solutionFree

Correct answer: A

Cardiac output = Stroke volume ×\times× Heart rate
Where stroke volume = End diastolic volume – End systolic volume
= 100 ml – 50 ml
= 50 ml

∴\therefore∴ 5000 mL = 50 mL × Heart rate

⇒\Rightarrow⇒ Heart rate = 500050{{5000} \over {50}}505000 = 100 beats per minute.
