If 'M' is the mass of water that rises in a capillary tube of radius 'r', then mass of water which will rise in a capillary tube of radius '2r' is :
  1. A
    M
  2. B
    4M
  3. C
    M/2
  4. D
    2M

Correct answer: D

  1. Capillary rise formula

For a liquid rising in a capillary tube of radius rrr, the height of rise is

h=2Tcos⁡θρgrh = \frac{2T\cos\theta}{\rho g r}h=ρgr2Tcosθ

where:

  • TTT = surface tension
  • θ\thetaθ = angle of contact
  • ρ\rhoρ = density of liquid
  • ggg = acceleration due to gravity

So,

h∝1rh \propto \frac{1}{r}h∝r1

  1. Mass of liquid risen in the tube

The mass of water in the tube is

m=ρ×volume=ρπr2hm = \rho \times \text{volume} = \rho \pi r^2 hm=ρ×volume=ρπr2h

Substitute h∝1rh \propto \frac{1}{r}h∝r1:

m∝r2⋅1r=rm \propto r^2 \cdot \frac{1}{r} = rm∝r2⋅r1=r

Thus, the mass of water risen is directly proportional to the radius of the tube:

m∝rm \propto rm∝r

  1. Compare tubes of radius rrr and 2r2r2r

If for radius rrr, the risen mass is MMM, then for radius 2r2r2r,

m′∝2rm' \propto 2rm′∝2r

Hence,

m′=2Mm' = 2Mm′=2M

  1. Option check
  • A: MMM ❌
  • B: 4M4M4M ❌
  • C: M/2M/2M/2 ❌
  • D: 2M2M2M ✅

Therefore, the correct answer is:

2M\boxed{2M}2M
