Two ions of masses 4 amu and 16 amu have charges +2e and +3e respectively. These ions pass through the region of constant perpendicular magnetic field. The kinetic energy of both ions is same. Then :
  1. A
    lighter ion will be deflected less than heavier ion
  2. B
    lighter ion will be deflected more than heavier ion
  3. C
    both ions will be deflected equally
  4. D
    no ion will be deflected

Correct answer: B

  1. Motion of a charged particle in a perpendicular magnetic field

When a charged particle enters a magnetic field perpendicular to its velocity, it moves in a circular path of radius

r=mvqBr = \frac{mv}{qB}r=qBmv

where:

  • mmm = mass of ion
  • vvv = speed of ion
  • qqq = charge of ion
  • BBB = magnetic field

The amount of deflection is greater for smaller radius and less for larger radius.

  1. Use the condition of equal kinetic energy

Given that both ions have the same kinetic energy,

K=12mv2K = \frac{1}{2}mv^2K=21mv2

So,

v=2Kmv = \sqrt{\frac{2K}{m}}v=m2K

Substitute into radius formula:

r=mqB2Km=2KmqBr = \frac{m}{qB}\sqrt{\frac{2K}{m}} = \frac{\sqrt{2Km}}{qB}r=qBmm2K=qB2Km

Thus,

r∝mqr \propto \frac{\sqrt{m}}{q}r∝qm

  1. Calculate for both ions

Ion 1 (lighter ion)

  • Mass m1=4 amum_1 = 4\,\text{amu}m1=4amu
  • Charge q1=+2eq_1 = +2eq1=+2e

r1∝42=22=1r_1 \propto \frac{\sqrt{4}}{2} = \frac{2}{2} = 1r1∝24=22=1

Ion 2 (heavier ion)

  • Mass m2=16 amum_2 = 16\,\text{amu}m2=16amu
  • Charge q2=+3eq_2 = +3eq2=+3e

r2∝163=43r_2 \propto \frac{\sqrt{16}}{3} = \frac{4}{3}r2∝316=34

So,

r2>r1r_2 > r_1r2>r1

The heavier ion has a larger radius, so it is deflected less. The lighter ion has a smaller radius, so it is deflected more.

  1. Check options
  • A: lighter ion will be deflected less than heavier ion ❌
  • B: lighter ion will be deflected more than heavier ion ✅
  • C: both ions will be deflected equally ❌
  • D: no ion will be deflected ❌

  1. Final answer

The correct option is

B\boxed{\text{B}}B
