A 2 kg block is pushed against a vertical wall by applying a horizontal force of 50 N. The coefficient of static friction between the block and the wall is 0.5. A force F is also applied on the block vertically upward (as shown in figure). The maximum value of F applied, so that the block does not move upward, will be : (Given : g = 10 ms −-− 2) JEE Main 2022 (Online) 30th June Morning Shift Physics - Laws of Motion Question 59 English

Correct answer: D

  1. Identify all forces on the block

The block of mass m=2 kgm=2\,\text{kg}m=2kg is pressed against a vertical wall by a horizontal force of 50 N50\,\text{N}50N.

    • Horizontal push on block = 50 N50\,\text{N}50N
    • Normal reaction by wall = N=50 NN=50\,\text{N}N=50N
    • Weight of block downward = mg=2×10=20 Nmg = 2\times 10 = 20\,\text{N}mg=2×10=20N
    • Applied vertical upward force = FFF
    • Static friction acts along the wall and opposes the tendency of motion.
  2. Maximum static friction

Given coefficient of static friction: μs=0.5\mu_s = 0.5μs=0.5

    Hence maximum static friction is fs,max⁡=μsN=0.5×50=25 Nf_{s,\max} = \mu_s N = 0.5\times 50 = 25\,\text{N}fs,max=μsN=0.5×50=25N

  3. Condition for maximum upward force without moving upward

If FFF is increased upward, the block tends to move upward.

Therefore static friction will act downward to oppose this tendency.

For the block to be just on the verge of moving upward, downward forces = upward forces.

    Upward force: FFF

    Downward forces:

    • weight =20 N=20\,\text{N}=20N
    • maximum friction =25 N=25\,\text{N}=25N

    So at limiting equilibrium, F=mg+fs,max⁡F = mg + f_{s,\max}F=mg+fs,max F=20+25=45 NF = 20 + 25 = 45\,\text{N}F=20+25=45N

  4. Answer

The maximum value of FFF so that the block does not move upward is 45 N\boxed{45\,\text{N}}45N

  5. Option check

    • A: 10 N10\,\text{N}10N — incorrect
    • B: 20 N20\,\text{N}20N — incorrect
    • C: 25 N25\,\text{N}25N — incorrect
    • D: 45 N45\,\text{N}45N — correct
  6. Comparison with stored answer

    Stored correct answer: D

    Our derived answer: D (45 N45\,\text{N}45N)

Hence, the derived answer agrees with the stored answer.
