The radii of two planets A and B are in the ratio 2 : 3. Their densities are 3 ρ\rhoρ and 5 ρ\rhoρ respectively. The ratio of their acceleration due to gravity is :
  1. A
    9 : 4
  2. B
    9 : 8
  3. C
    9 : 10
  4. D
    2 : 5

Correct answer: D

  1. For a planet, acceleration due to gravity at the surface is

g=GMR2g = \frac{GM}{R^2}g=R2GM

  1. Mass of a spherical planet is

M=43πR3ρM = \frac{4}{3}\pi R^3 \rhoM=34πR3ρ

Substitute into the formula for ggg:

g=G(43πR3ρ)R2=43πGRρg = \frac{G\left(\frac{4}{3}\pi R^3 \rho\right)}{R^2} = \frac{4}{3}\pi G R \rhog=R2G(34πR3ρ)=34πGRρ

So,

g∝Rρg \propto R\rhog∝Rρ

  1. Given:
  • Radii ratio: RA:RB=2:3R_A : R_B = 2 : 3RA:RB=2:3
  • Density of A: 3ρ3\rho3ρ
  • Density of B: 5ρ5\rho5ρ

Therefore,

gA:gB=(RAρA):(RBρB)g_A : g_B = (R_A \rho_A) : (R_B \rho_B)gA:gB=(RAρA):(RBρB)

=(2⋅3ρ):(3⋅5ρ)= (2 \cdot 3\rho) : (3 \cdot 5\rho)=(2⋅3ρ):(3⋅5ρ)

=6ρ:15ρ=2:5= 6\rho : 15\rho = 2 : 5=6ρ:15ρ=2:5

  1. Hence, the correct option is:

2:5\boxed{2:5}2:5

So, Option D is correct.
