Correct answer: B

  1. Given data
  • Distance between object and image =20 cm= 20\,\text{cm}=20cm
  • Magnification m=−3m = -3m=−3
  • For a mirror, magnification is m=−vum = -\frac{v}{u}m=−uv

So, −vu=−3  ⟹  vu=3  ⟹  v=3u-\frac{v}{u} = -3 \implies \frac{v}{u} = 3 \implies v = 3u−uv=−3⟹uv=3⟹v=3u

  1. Use the object-image separation

For a concave mirror forming a real image, object and image are on the same side of the mirror. Since ∣v∣>∣u∣|v| > |u|∣v∣>∣u∣ here, the separation is ∣v−u∣=20|v-u| = 20∣v−u∣=20

Using v=3uv = 3uv=3u, ∣3u−u∣=20|3u-u| = 20∣3u−u∣=20 ∣2u∣=20|2u| = 20∣2u∣=20 ∣u∣=10 cm|u| = 10\,\text{cm}∣u∣=10cm

Thus, ∣v∣=30 cm|v| = 30\,\text{cm}∣v∣=30cm

Using Cartesian sign convention for a concave mirror: u=−10 cm,v=−30 cmu = -10\,\text{cm}, \quad v = -30\,\text{cm}u=−10cm,v=−30cm

  1. Apply mirror formula

1f=1v+1u\frac{1}{f} = \frac{1}{v} + \frac{1}{u}f1=v1+u1

Substitute values: 1f=1−30+1−10\frac{1}{f} = \frac{1}{-30} + \frac{1}{-10}f1=−301+−101 1f=−130−110=−130−330=−430=−215\frac{1}{f} = -\frac{1}{30} - \frac{1}{10} = -\frac{1}{30} - \frac{3}{30} = -\frac{4}{30} = -\frac{2}{15}f1=−301−101=−301−303=−304=−152

So, f=−152=−7.5 cmf = -\frac{15}{2} = -7.5\,\text{cm}f=−215=−7.5cm

  1. Find radius of curvature

R=2fR = 2fR=2f R=2(−7.5)=−15 cmR = 2(-7.5) = -15\,\text{cm}R=2(−7.5)=−15cm

Hence the magnitude of radius of curvature is ∣R∣=15 cm|R| = 15\,\text{cm}∣R∣=15cm

  1. Option check
  • A: 3.75 cm3.75\,\text{cm}3.75cm — incorrect
  • B: 15 cm15\,\text{cm}15cm — correct
  • C: 7.5 cm7.5\,\text{cm}7.5cm — incorrect
  • D: 30 cm30\,\text{cm}30cm — incorrect

Therefore, the correct answer is B.
