A light wave travelling linearly in a medium of dielectric constant 4, incidents on the horizontal interface separating medium with air. The angle of incidence for which the total intensity of incident wave will be reflected back into the same medium will be : (Given : relative permeability of medium μ\muμ r = 1)
  1. A
    10 ∘^\circ∘
  2. B
    20 ∘^\circ∘
  3. C

Correct answer: D

  1. Find the refractive index of the medium

Given dielectric constant of the medium: εr=4\varepsilon_r = 4εr=4 and relative permeability: μr=1\mu_r = 1μr=1

The refractive index is n=εrμr=4⋅1=2n = \sqrt{\varepsilon_r \mu_r} = \sqrt{4 \cdot 1} = 2n=εrμr=4⋅1=2

So, light is travelling from a medium of refractive index 222 to air of refractive index 111.

  1. Condition for total internal reflection

For total internal reflection, the angle of incidence must be greater than or equal to the critical angle. The critical angle CCC is given by sin⁡C=n2n1=12\sin C = \frac{n_2}{n_1} = \frac{1}{2}sinC=n1n2=21 where

  • n1=2n_1 = 2n1=2 (denser medium)
  • n2=1n_2 = 1n2=1 (air)

Thus, C=sin⁡−1(12)=30∘C = \sin^{-1}\left(\frac{1}{2}\right) = 30^\circC=sin−1(21)=30∘

  1. Interpret the phrase "total intensity of incident wave will be reflected back"

This means the entire incident light is reflected, i.e. total internal reflection occurs. Hence the angle of incidence must be greater than the critical angle: i>30∘i > 30^\circi>30∘

  1. Check the options
  • A: 10∘10^\circ10∘ <30∘< 30^\circ<30∘ → not possible
  • B: 20∘20^\circ20∘ <30∘< 30^\circ<30∘ → not possible
  • C: 30∘30^\circ30∘ = critical angle, refracted ray grazes the interface; not total internal reflection
  • D: 60∘60^\circ60∘ >30∘> 30^\circ>30∘ → total internal reflection occurs
  1. Final answer

Therefore, the correct option is: 60∘\boxed{60^\circ}60∘
