Correct answer: C

  1. Energy densities in an electromagnetic wave

For an electromagnetic wave propagating in a medium, the instantaneous energy densities are:

uE=12 εE2u_E = \frac{1}{2}\,\varepsilon E^2uE=21εE2

and

uB=B22μu_B = \frac{B^2}{2\mu}uB=2μB2

where ε\varepsilonε is the permittivity and μ\muμ is the permeability of the medium.

  1. Relation between EEE and BBB in a medium

For an electromagnetic wave in a medium,

v=1μεv = \frac{1}{\sqrt{\mu\varepsilon}}v=με1

and also

E=vBE = vBE=vB

So,

E2=v2B2=1μεB2E^2 = v^2 B^2 = \frac{1}{\mu\varepsilon} B^2E2=v2B2=με1B2

  1. Substitute into electric energy density

uE=12εE2=12ε(1μεB2)=B22μu_E = \frac{1}{2}\varepsilon E^2 = \frac{1}{2}\varepsilon \left(\frac{1}{\mu\varepsilon}B^2\right) = \frac{B^2}{2\mu}uE=21εE2=21ε(με1B2)=2μB2

But

uB=B22μu_B = \frac{B^2}{2\mu}uB=2μB2

Hence,

uE=uBu_E = u_BuE=uB
