Correct answer: C

  1. Magnetic dipole moment of a current loop

A current-carrying rectangular loop behaves like a magnetic dipole with magnetic moment

m⃗=IA n^\vec m = I A \, \hat nm=IAn^

where:

  • I=12 AI = 12\,\text{A}I=12A
  • A=(0.10)(0.05)=5×10−3 m2A = (0.10)(0.05) = 5\times 10^{-3}\,\text{m}^2A=(0.10)(0.05)=5×10−3m2
  • n^\hat nn^ is the unit vector normal to the plane of the loop, given by the right-hand rule.

So the magnitude is

m=IA=12×5×10−3=6×10−2 A m2m = IA = 12 \times 5\times 10^{-3} = 6\times 10^{-2}\,\text{A m}^2m=IA=12×5×10−3=6×10−2A m2

  1. Condition for equilibrium

In a uniform magnetic field B⃗\vec BB, the torque on the loop is

τ⃗=m⃗×B⃗\vec \tau = \vec m \times \vec Bτ=m×B

For equilibrium,

τ⃗=0\vec \tau = 0τ=0

which happens when m⃗\vec mm is either parallel or antiparallel to B⃗\vec BB.

  1. Stable vs unstable equilibrium

Potential energy of a magnetic dipole in a magnetic field is

U=−m⃗⋅B⃗=−mBcos⁡θU = -\vec m \cdot \vec B = -mB\cos\thetaU=−m⋅B=−mBcosθ

where θ\thetaθ is the angle between m⃗\vec mm and B⃗\vec BB.

  • For stable equilibrium, potential energy must be minimum.
  • UUU is minimum when θ=0∘\theta = 0^\circθ=0∘.

Hence stable equilibrium occurs when

m⃗∥B⃗\vec m \parallel \vec Bm∥B

Since the magnetic field is along the positive ZZZ-direction, the stable orientation is the one in which the loop’s magnetic moment points along +Z+Z+Z.

  1. Interpretation for the loop

The magnetic moment is perpendicular to the plane of the loop. Therefore, the loop must orient itself so that its area vector (given by current direction through right-hand rule) is along +Z+Z+Z.

Among the given figures, this corresponds to Option C.

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Derived answer: C

Stored correct answer: C

They match.
