Center of Mass question

2023 · 25 Jan · Shift 2 · Q72

JEE MainPhysicsCenter of MassNumerical+4 / −1
A body of mass 1 kg collides head on elastically with a stationary body of mass 3 kg. After collision, the smaller body reverses its direction of motion and moves with a speed of 2 m/s. The initial speed of the smaller body before collision is ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}} ms −1^{-1}−1.

Correct answer: 4

  1. Given data
  • Mass of smaller body: m1=1 kgm_1 = 1\,\text{kg}m1=1kg
  • Mass of larger body: m2=3 kgm_2 = 3\,\text{kg}m2=3kg
  • Initially, larger body is stationary: u2=0u_2 = 0u2=0
  • Let initial speed of smaller body be u1=uu_1 = uu1=u
  • After collision, smaller body reverses direction with speed 2 m/s2\,\text{m/s}2m/s, so v1=−2 m/sv_1 = -2\,\text{m/s}v1=−2m/s

Since the collision is elastic, we can use the standard result for 1D elastic collision:

v1=m1−m2m1+m2u1+2m2m1+m2u2v_1 = \frac{m_1-m_2}{m_1+m_2}u_1 + \frac{2m_2}{m_1+m_2}u_2v1=m1+m2m1−m2u1+m1+m22m2u2

Because u2=0u_2=0u2=0, this becomes

v1=m1−m2m1+m2u1v_1 = \frac{m_1-m_2}{m_1+m_2}u_1v1=m1+m2m1−m2u1

  1. Substitute values

−2=1−31+3u-2 = \frac{1-3}{1+3}u−2=1+31−3u

−2=−24u-2 = \frac{-2}{4}u−2=4−2u

−2=−12u-2 = -\frac{1}{2}u−2=−21u

  1. Solve for uuu

u=4 m/su = 4\,\text{m/s}u=4m/s

  1. Final answer

The initial speed of the smaller body was

4\boxed{4}4

ms−1^{-1}−1.
