Hydrogen atom is excited from ground state to another state with principal quantum number equal to 4.4.4. Then the number of spectral lines in the emission spectra will be :
  1. A
    222
  2. B
    333
  3. C
    555
  4. D
    666

Correct answer: D

  1. Given state of excitation

The hydrogen atom is excited from the ground state to the state with principal quantum number n=4.n=4.n=4.

  2. Possible downward transitions

When the electron returns from n=4n=4n=4 to lower levels, spectral lines are produced for every possible transition between the available levels: n=4,3,2,1.n=4,3,2,1.n=4,3,2,1.

    The possible emission transitions are:

    • 4→34 \to 34→3
    • 4→24 \to 24→2
    • 4→14 \to 14→1
    • 3→23 \to 23→2
    • 3→13 \to 13→1
    • 2→12 \to 12→1

So total number of distinct spectral lines =6= 6=6.

  3. Formula method

If an atom is excited to level nnn, then the maximum number of spectral lines emitted is N=n(n−1)2.N=\frac{n(n-1)}{2}.N=2n(n−1).

    For n=4n=4n=4, N=4(4−1)2=122=6.N=\frac{4(4-1)}{2}=\frac{12}{2}=6.N=24(4−1)=212=6.

  4. Option check

    • A: 222 ✗
    • B: 333 ✗
    • C: 555 ✗
    • D: 666 ✓

Therefore, the correct answer is D.
