Let A and B be two sets containing 2 elements and 4 elements respectively. The number of subsets of A ×\times× B having 3 or more elements is :
  1. A
    219
  2. B
    211

Correct answer: A

  1. Find the size of A×BA \times BA×B

Given:

  • ∣A∣=2|A| = 2∣A∣=2
  • ∣B∣=4|B| = 4∣B∣=4

So, ∣A×B∣=∣A∣⋅∣B∣=2⋅4=8|A \times B| = |A|\cdot |B| = 2\cdot 4 = 8∣A×B∣=∣A∣⋅∣B∣=2⋅4=8

Thus, A×BA \times BA×B has 888 elements.

  1. Total number of subsets of A×BA \times BA×B

A set with 888 elements has: 28=2562^8 = 25628=256 subsets.

  1. We need subsets having 3 or more elements

So subtract subsets having 0,1,0,1,0,1, or 222 elements.

  • Number of subsets with 000 elements: (80)=1\binom{8}{0} = 1(08)=1

  • Number of subsets with 111 element: (81)=8\binom{8}{1} = 8(18)=8

  • Number of subsets with 222 elements: (82)=28\binom{8}{2} = 28(28)=28

Total subsets with fewer than 333 elements: 1+8+28=371+8+28 = 371+8+28=37

  1. Required number

256−37=219256 - 37 = 219256−37=219

So, the number of subsets of A×BA \times BA×B having 333 or more elements is: 219\boxed{219}219

  1. Check options
  • A: 219219219 ✅
  • B: 211211211 ❌
  • C: 256256256 ❌
  • D: 220220220 ❌

Therefore, the correct option is A.
