  1. Statement (a): UUU and HHH each depend only on temperature.

For an ideal gas, U=U(T)U = U(T)U=U(T) and since H=U+PV=U+RTH = U + PV = U + RTH=U+PV=U+RT for one mole of ideal gas, HHH also depends only on TTT.

So, (a) is true.


  1. Statement (b): Compressibility factor zzz is not equal to 111.

Compressibility factor is z=PVnRTz = \frac{PV}{nRT}z=nRTPV​ For an ideal gas, PV=nRT  ⟹  z=1PV = nRT \implies z = 1PV=nRT⟹z=1 So the statement "zzz is not equal to 111" is false.

For an ideal gas, internal energy depends only on temperature. Therefore, dU=(∂U∂T)VdT=CVdTdU = \left(\frac{\partial U}{\partial T}\right)_V dT = C_V dTdU=(∂T∂U​)V​dT=CV​dT Since UUU is a function only of TTT, this differential holds for any process.
