1. Condition for isothermal expansion

For an ideal gas in an isothermal process, PV=nRT=constantPV = nRT = \text{constant}PV=nRT=constant Since temperature is constant,

  • if volume VVV increases, pressure PPP must decrease,
  • the PPP–VVV curve is a rectangular hyperbola,
  • PPP vs 1/V1/V1/V is a straight line through the origin,
  • VVV vs 1/P1/P1/P is also a straight line through the origin,
  • PVPVPV remains constant during the process.

So, any graph claiming to represent isothermal expansion must satisfy these relations.


2. Check the plots conceptually
