Correct answer: 18

  1. Write the combustion reactions

For a hydrocarbon CxHyC_xH_yCxHy, complete combustion is: CxHy+(x+y4)O2→xCO2+y2H2OC_xH_y + \left(x + \frac{y}{4}\right)O_2 \rightarrow xCO_2 + \frac{y}{2}H_2OCxHy+(x+4y)O2→xCO2+2yH2O

  1. For propane, C3H8C_3H_8C3H8

Using the formula: O2=3+84=3+2=5O_2 = 3 + \frac{8}{4} = 3 + 2 = 5O2=3+48=3+2=5

So, C3H8+5O2→3CO2+4H2OC_3H_8 + 5O_2 \rightarrow 3CO_2 + 4H_2OC3H8+5O2→3CO2+4H2O

Thus, 1 mole of propane requires 5 moles of O2O_2O2.

  1. For butane, C4H10C_4H_{10}C4H10

Using the formula: O2=4+104=4+2.5=6.5O_2 = 4 + \frac{10}{4} = 4 + 2.5 = 6.5O2=4+410=4+2.5=6.5

So, C4H10+132O2→4CO2+5H2OC_4H_{10} + \frac{13}{2}O_2 \rightarrow 4CO_2 + 5H_2OC4H10+213O2→4CO2+5H2O

Thus, 1 mole of butane requires 132\frac{13}{2}213 moles of O2O_2O2.

Therefore, 2 moles of butane require: 2×132=13 moles of O22 \times \frac{13}{2} = 13 \text{ moles of } O_22×213=13 moles of O2

  1. Total oxygen required

For 1 mole propane + 2 moles butane: 5+13=185 + 13 = 185+13=18

Hence, the minimum number of moles of O2O_2O2 required is: 18\boxed{18}18
