Transition metal complex with highest value of crystal field splitting (Δ\DeltaΔ 0) will be :
  1. A
    [Cr(H2O)6]3+[Cr(H_2O)_6]^{3+}[Cr(H2O)6]3+
  2. B
    [Mo(H2O)6]3+[Mo(H_2O)_6]^{3+}[Mo(H2O)6]3+
  3. C
    [Fe(H2O)6]3+[Fe(H_2O)_6]^{3+}[Fe(H2O)6]3+
  4. D
    [Os(H2O)6]3+[Os(H_2O)_6]^{3+}[Os(H2O)6]3+

Correct answer: D

  1. We compare the octahedral crystal field splitting Δo\Delta_oΔo for the given complexes: [M(H2O)6]3+[M(H_2O)_6]^{3+}[M(H2O)6]3+ where the ligand is the same in all cases: H2OH_2OH2O.

  2. Since the ligand is the same, the main factor affecting Δo\Delta_oΔo is the nature of the metal ion.

  3. For a given ligand, crystal field splitting generally increases:

    • with increasing oxidation state,
    • and importantly, from 3d<4d<5d3d < 4d < 5d3d<4d<5d transition series.
  4. Here all metal ions are in the same oxidation state +3+3+3, so we compare based on the transition series:

    • Cr3+Cr^{3+}Cr3+ is a 3d3d3d metal
    • Fe3+Fe^{3+}Fe3+ is also a 3d3d3d metal
    • Mo3+Mo^{3+}Mo3+ is a 4d4d4d metal
    • Os3+Os^{3+}Os3+ is a 5d5d5d metal
  5. For the same ligand and same oxidation state: Δo(5d)>Δo(4d)>Δo(3d)\Delta_o(5d) > \Delta_o(4d) > \Delta_o(3d)Δo(5d)>Δo(4d)>Δo(3d) Therefore, [Os(H2O)6]3+[Os(H_2O)_6]^{3+}[Os(H2O)6]3+ will have the highest crystal field splitting.

  6. Checking options:

    • A: [Cr(H2O)6]3+[Cr(H_2O)_6]^{3+}[Cr(H2O)6]3+ — smaller than 5d5d5d
    • B: [Mo(H2O)6]3+[Mo(H_2O)_6]^{3+}[Mo(H2O)6]3+ — larger than 3d3d3d, but smaller than 5d5d5d
    • C: [Fe(H2O)6]3+[Fe(H_2O)_6]^{3+}[Fe(H2O)6]3+ — 3d3d3d, not maximum
    • D: [Os(H2O)6]3+[Os(H_2O)_6]^{3+}[Os(H2O)6]3+ — maximum

Hence, the correct answer is D.
